DesignUp’s first visit to Chennai in 2018 started off with an afternoon of workshops—followed by talks and dinner at a boutique Hotel in the heart of the city. A quick cup of coffee was all it took for Shandar Junaid to get started on an Adobe XD learning workshop. Attendees equipped with their laptops, spent time understanding the ways of validating ideas and creating interactive prototypes from sketches.
Meanwhile, Rasagy Sharma conducted the workshop ‘Designing Rules that Rule Design’ – exploring generative design, that can be applied in branding, data visualization, architecture & more.
How do we design for ever-changing contexts, with infinite variations and using dynamic data? Designing rule-based systems is a core skill for Computational Designers, and is grounded in decades-old work by designers & artists like Sol Lewitt, Karl Gerstner & Jean Tinguely.

The workshops ended with a coffee break—setting the stage for the Talks and The Grill.
Srinath Rangamani, a Chennai native and Head of Design at Swiggy shared his journey as a Designer and the design processes he has followed.
Jay Dutta, Founder & Curator of DesignUp, drew parallels between Arranged Marriage and Product Design—and what Designers can learn from designing relationships and take it over to designing interfaces.
V Shivakumar hosted his first episode of The Grill: a unique panel discussion format
The Panelists – all leaders in design – from organisations across Chennai shared with the audience their personal journeys, the challenges they have overcome and the need for organisations to realise the potential and value of design.
The evening, and the panel, wrapped up with a multi-course networking dinner – including the quintessential Chettinad cuisine!
Chennai – stay tuned, we’re coming back for more!
